Biography

Richard Wenman was born in about 1470, the son of Henry Wenman (Wenman-248) and Emmotte Hervey (Hervey-23). His place of birth is unknown but may have been in Berkshire. Henry Wenman was probably a woolman, and had interests in Abingdon and Blewbury, Berks. [1] In 1468 Henry Weneman or Wyneman was of Abingdon. [2]

In 1501 Emmotte Fermer of Witney, Oxon, the widow of Henry Wenman and Thomas Fermer, made a bequest of 100 pounds "unto my eldist son Richard Wynnam." [3]

Richard was a "Merchant Stapler": https://www.britannica.com/topic/Merchants-Staplers

They were financiers of the crown, who collected duties through their work.

The Britannica entry isn't quite accurate. What happened was that the Staple loaned the Crown money, not always entirely voluntarily. The Crown would then not be able to pay back the loan directly, so would grant the Staple debtors a discount on duty until the debt was paid off. I transcribed one such grant here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Calendar_of_the_Patent_Rolls_Preserved_in_the_Public_Record_Office:_Henry_VI:_20_October_1449 from the Patent Rolls as part of my work on the Cely Papers.
