Biography

cf. family sources supplemented with data from IKG-Wien Archives & Cemetery Databank. Some details and especially the photo courtesy of Debra Lavender.

BERTA STRICKER [WENGRAF]was born about 1868, in Wien?, to Ignatz WENGRAFand Julie WENGRAF [POLLITZ].

Berta died on 2 February 1942, aged about 73, in Wien. She was buried on 15 July 1947 in Wien, Feuerhalle Simmering: 1-1-2-13.

The following information is also recorded for Berta. Initial Burial on 6 February 1942, in Wien, Zentralfriedhof T4/20d-1-10.

Notes: • N.B. PHOTO COURTESY OF DEBRA LAVENDER and also the following detail, written in a letter to Debra by Berta's granddaughter Eva: "Berta had, being Jewish, to leave her appartment in 1941, but fortunately my mother Flora could arrange a room for her in a Seniors' Home for Jews in Vienna, organised by a Swedish mission. So (Berta) died peacefully of old age and pneumonia there.".

• cf. Lisl's recollections: Berta is remembered as a sweet, silver-haired, kindly & elegant elderly lady by the early teenage Lisl. A particular gesture of hers has been treasured for years: it happened shortly before Erny and Lisl had to leave Vienna in the autumn of 1938. These were, of course, anxious times. Berta called Lisl to her and said she wanted to give her something pretty and eventually of value to afford the young girl a little cheer in the bleak outlook. It was a gold bracelet set with three opals and tiny diamonds ... Several years later, when Lisl had married in England and was at last leading a more established life, she decided to have the then rather unfashionable plain band transformed into a ring and two earrings, using the surplus gold to cover the costs of the craftsmanship. Whenever she would wear these thereafter she would think of dear Berta .
