Biography

Samuel Montross Weeden was born on April 2, 1836, in Warwick, Orange, New York. He was the son of John M. Weeden and Sarah Jane Montross.

His father died in early 1840, and in the 1840 Census, he was living with his widowed mother and siblings in West Milford, Passaic, New Jersey.[1] In 1850, Samuel was living with his mother and stepfather and siblings in Warwick, Orange, New York.[2]

At the age of 21, Samuel married Harriet Amelia Luckey on November 4, 1857, in Warwick, Orange, New York when she was 20 years old. They had five children - Theodore L., Frances Emily, Samuel Seeley, Sarah Flora, and Harry.

In 1860, 1865 and 1870, Samuel and Harriet were living with their children in Warwick, Orange, New York.[3][4] [5]

Samuel served as a private in the U.S. Army during the Civil War between August 12, 1862 and June 3, 1865 in the 124th NY Regiment, Company D (known as the "Orange Blossoms"), during which service he received a wound in the thigh.[6][7][8][9]

By 1875, the family had moved to Hardyston, Sussex, New Jersey,[10] and in seven censuses from 1880-1910 they were located in Vernon, Sussex, New Jersey, during which period he was working as a carpenter.[11][12][6][13] In 1900, the couple was living with their widowed daughter Sarah Morgan and her two daughters, while in 1905, they had only the two granddaughters with them.[14][15] In 1910, the couple was on its own. [16]

He died in McAfee, Sussex, New Jersey on March 9, 1915, at the age of 78. Samuel was buried at Warwick Cemetery in Warwick, Orange, New York.[17] The firing squad of the Sons of Veterans officiated at the grave.[18]
