Biography

Robert Webster immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Birth: 17 Nov 1619 Christening: 8 Dec 1619 both at Cossington, Leicestershire, England

Sept., 1651: At the organization of the town of Middleton, was chosen Recorder.[1]

1652: "In 1652, he settled in Middletown Upper Houses. He represented Middletown in the General Court from September, 1653, to May, 1655; from May to October, 1656; from October, 1656, to October, 1658, returning to Hartford later that year"[2]

Marriage: 10 Nov 1653 at Weathersfield, Hartford, Conn to Susannah Treat

8 May, 1654: Confirmed Lieutenant in Middletown.[3]. And same year on commitee to "impress men and neccesaries for the Narragansett expedition[4].

1659: John WEBSTER, Esq., with 3 sons Robert, William and Thomas,associated with others in the purchase and settlement of Hadley, MA

1662, 1663 Juryman at Hartford, CT[5].

1668 in will of father-in-law, Robert Treat and, also, helped inventory his estate[6].

9 May, 1672: Hartford granted him 300 acres of land[7].

1673 helped survey lands on Naugatuck River, CT[8]

11 Oct., 1675 on committee for defenses of town[9].

Death and Burial: 31 May 1676 at Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut[10]

Will dated 20 May 1676, inventory of estate dated 29 Jun 1676, Hartford, CT[11].

His widow Susannah died in 1705[12].

"Robert Webster, son of Governor John Webster, was born 17 November 1619 in England and came to America with his parents. He grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, and in 1652 married Susannah Treat (b. 8 October 1629), daughter of Richard and Alice (Gaylord) Treat. A brother of Susannah (Treat) Webster was the Honorable Robert Treat who was the eighth Governor of Connecticut.

"Robert was given a commission in the militia and was sent out to wage war on the Indians. As a military title was not taken lightly in those days, and anyone holding one was looked upon with much respect, he was known as Lieutenant Robert Webster for the rest of his life. He also served in the General Court of Connecticut, as did his father. Robert was very active in government and in the church, owned several hundred acres of land, some of it in what is now the heart of the city of Hartford, and was considered a very wealthy man."[13]

  4. Susannah b 26 Oct 1658 marr about 1680 to John GRAVE of Hartford. She died in 1688, aged 30 yrs
  5. Samuel b about 1660 marr Elizabeth, dau of Robert REEVE of Hartford
  6. Robert b about 1662 marr 1st 10 Sep 1689 to Hannah, daug of John BECKLEY of Weathersfield; marr 2nd Sarah, daug of Joseph EDWARDS was the widow of Jonathan COLFAX; marr 3rd 20 July 1731 Susannah, daug of Joseph BAKER and granddaughter of John BASEY
  7. Joseph b about 1665 marr 1st 22 Feb 1696 to Mary JUDD, daug of Banjamin and Mary (Lewis) Judd of Farmington; marr 2nd Hannah, daug of Nathaniel WILLETT of Hartford was the widow of Basey Baker
