American silent film actress, screenwriter, producer, and director
As a child, Lois was considered a musical prodigy. She was a soprano singer and an excellent pianist. Lois began acting in 1904 and moved to New York City. By 1908 she was writing scripts and began directing.
In 1917, she opened Lois Weber Productions, making her the first American woman to have her own movie studio. Lois was also the first woman elected to the Motion Pictures Directors Association. She discovered and mentored many female actors including including Mary MacLaren, Mildred Harris, Claire Windsor, Esther Ralston, Billie Dove, Ella Hall, Cleo Ridgely, and Anita Stewart. She also discovered and inspired screenwriter Frances Marion.
She was married to Phillips Smalley & Capt Harry Gantz. Lois and Phillips had a daughter named Phoebe, who died at just one day old. They had no other children.
