Hello!

I was wondering if you were pre-1500 certified perhaps you could offer advice as to the steps you took for getting the last bit done. I have met all requirements but the group I joined didn't count because it was for an "event". You and I have been commenting on the same thread about John Sutton (Dudley) and when I saw you add the photo I figured I would ask...and get your opinion on how, if at all, to go about working on that profile. Thanks for your time, Becky Elizabeth (Simmons-11603)

Hi Becky! No, I am not pre-1500 certified. I only just discovered Wikitree this year, however, I have been doing genealogy on Ancestry.com since the early 1990’s. Haven’t delved into any “events” or into being certified for special projects at this point in time but am getting more interested in learning how to become further “certified” and how the different levels of Wikitree work. Perhaps we can ferret it out together by taking on John Sutton Dudley.

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Thank you for signing the Honor Code, Leanne!

Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. It normally takes 24 hours from adding a test, or adding a new ancestor, or ancestor’s descendant, for WikiTree to display your name and test results on your ancestors and their descendants’ profiles for potential cousins to compare results with.

Have fun!

Hi

The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches. Once you have done this the data from your file will be filled in on the add profile screen so that you can review and make adjustments before saving

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.
