When Ruth Esther Washington was born on June 25, 1919, her father, Lemuel Washington, was 29, and her mother, Esther McCoy, was 25. She had one son with Joseph J. Stanley. She then married John Henry Smith on May 8, 1937 in Portsmouth, Virginia and had five children. She died on July 30, 1955, in Dinwiddie, Virginia, at the age of 36, and was buried in Portsmouth, Virginia.
