The Carmarthen Weekly Reporter, 28 May 1909
Obituary MR W. de GROUCHY WARREN. News reached Carmarthen on Thursday morning of the death at his residence in Kensington, of Mr W. de Grouchy Warren. Mr Warren was for half a century one of the best known public men in Carmarthen. He had been an alderman and mayor of the Borough, and was the senior Justice of the Peace for Carmanthen. He was over 80 years of age at the time of his death. He retired from business in 1886, and went to reside in London. His father and his brother and himself had carried on the business for over half a century in King street in the premises now occupied by Mr D. Warren Lewis. He used to take the keenest interest in Carmarthen affairs, and a copy of the 'Reporter' followed him to Canada and various other parts of the world—for he was a constant traveller. His letters to friends showed that he took the keenest interest in local affairs to the last. He was a good old fashioned Liberal, an upright business man, and in his public offices kept a high standard of duty before him which raised the tone of public life in the Borough. He is survived by two sons and four daughters - one of the latter being Mrs R. M. Thomas, wife of our former worthy Town Clerk. The funeral will, we believe, take place at Carmarthen on Friday (to-day).

On one occasion he was presiding at a Disestablishment meeting when he informed the audience they were there not at a religious meeting, but a purely political meeting. A few nights after at a Church Defence meeting, held in reply, his friend. Dr. Rowlands, retorted by imploring his hearers to remember theirs was not a political meeting, but a purely religious one. In 1886 Mr. Warren transferred his business to Mr. D. Lewis, whom for the purpose of distinction he allowed the use of the name D. Warren Lewis. and went to London, where he had since carried on business as a tea merchant in Tower Street.
