Biography

Isabella was born 23 September 1253, the second daughter of John de Warenne, seventh earl of Surrey, and Alice Lusignon, whose father was Hugues de Lusignan, count of La Marche and Angouême.[1][2] She married John de Balliol shortly before 10 February 1251 (the date when their contract of marriage was said to be "lately confirmed),[2] this date is also supported by a grant made in March, 1251 by Dervorguilla to her son John and his wife Isabella, "daughter of Earl Warenne." [3]

There was at least one child from this marriage: [see research note on profile for John de Balliol]

The exact date of Isabella's death is unknown. She was alive in November, 1289,[6] and a portrait of her, as queen, appeared with one of King John in the Seton Armorial of 1591 (although this does not prove she was still living at that time).[7] At least one source claims that she was dead before a treaty was made with France on 23 October 1295, but gives no source supporting this.[8]
