Biography

Elizabeth was born about 1700 "under the jurisdiction of the Corporation of Kingstown" (referring to Kingston, Ulster County, New York).[1]

She married Hendrick Ostrander on 12 May 1724 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York. Banns had been registered on 19 April. The marriage record gives her name as Elisabeth Wamboom.[1] The will of her father, Pieter Van Bommel, said to have been written on 1 April 1723, reportedly names Elizabeth, wife of Hendrick Ostrander, as one of his children.[2]

The family resided on a farm in New Hurley, Ulster County, New York.[3]

A family Bible belonging to Hendrick Ostrander is a source for records of the births of his children and several generations of descendants.[4] He wrote in the Bible, "I, Henricus Oostrander, hort det bock toi yek desem Beybel go kogt van Derick Schepmoes vur 4 pont 6 Schnelnum den 22 desember ent jaar 1722" ("I, Henricus Oostrander, bought this Bible from Derick Schepmoes for 4.6 shillings on 22 December 1722"). Data was copied from the Bible by Nathaniel J. Ostrander, a descendant of Hendrick Ostrander and Elisabeth Van Bommel, in 1892.[5]

Children of Hendrick Ostrander and Elisabeth Van Bommel were:[6]

  1. Petrus, baptized 7 February 1725.[7]
  2. Deborah, born 18 September 1726. Baptized 25 September 1726 in the Reformed Dutch Church in Kingston (Ulster County), New York. The record of her baptism gives her name as Debora and identifies her parents as Hendrik Oostrander and Elisabeth Wamboom. Witnesses were Pieter Wamboom and Debora Wamboom.[8]
  3. Rebecca, born Hurley, New York; baptized 19 May 1728.[9]
  4. Gideon, born 13 December 1730.
  5. Wilhelmus, baptized in Kingston 19 November 1732.[10] Died young.
  6. Marcus Jacobus, born 3 December 1735, baptized 7 December 1735.[11]
  7. Christoffel, born 22 September 1737, baptized 25 September 1737.[12]
  8. Jonathan, baptized 19 October 1740.,[13]
  9. Wilhelmus, born 28 April 1743; baptized 15 May 1743.[14]
  10. David, baptized 20 April 1746.[15]
  11. David, born 21 January 1751; baptized 3 February 1751.[16]

An additional child named Maria is listed on page 456 of Ostrander: A Genealogical Record, but an erratum on page 775 states that this is incorrect and that Hendrick had no child named Maria.

Henerik Ostrander and wife Elizabeth Van Bommele became members of the church at New Paltz, New York, on 21 April 1764, with letters from Kingston.[17]

Elizabeth Van Bommel died at New Hurley circa 1776.[18]
