A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg with the regular army on February 20, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 10th U.S. Infantry. Captured at Virginia's North Anna River May 24, 1864, he was incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville where he died of dysentery.

The widowed Hannah married James H. Hyde July 13, 1866, in Cayuga County, New York.
