He married Hannah Rider June 22, 1855, in Linglestown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Mary Elizabeth (b. 12/06/59). In 1860, he was an oiler presumably living in Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, where his daughter was born, but he is not found in that census in either Northumberland or Dauphin County. He stood 5' 4" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg with the regular army on February 20, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 10th U.S. Infantry. Captured at Virginia's North Anna River May 24, 1864, he was incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville where he died of dysentery.
The widowed Hannah married James H. Hyde July 13, 1866, in Cayuga County, New York.
