Haskell was born in Talihina, Le Flore, Oklahoma, United States, 21 September 1925 to Bernie C Walling and Betty Bishop^[1][2]

He was the sixth of eight children.^[3] His family referred to him as Rodman or Goodman.

The family left the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma and relocated to the Imperial Valley of California in 1939. 1940 census in California, Imperial, Judicial Township 8. ^[4]
