Research Notes

Margarets first husband was convict. Suspect that Samuel is also a convict but not narrowed it down. On Samuels death index it says place of birth "Lanc". hence convict deatils. HOwever, it appears that the Samuel Transported in 1843, was single (although its hard to read the writing). Superficial research on his convict history conducted by myself in the Libraries of Tasmania online Names Index (has images of convict records). It does make sense that they would connect. Mary Lees (first wife) probably remained in England with children from the first marriage while he was transported. Once the convicts arrived if they were 'lifers' or long term I believe that they were given permission to marry upon application. In Samuels instance, they married in 1854, (and he probably had his ticket of leave at that stage and didn't need permission). it also explains the number of children born before they married. OR the delay in marriage was because her first husband was still alive.
