Biography

Major Eric George Sherbrooke Walker was a hotelier and founder of the Outspan Hotel and Treetops Hotel in Kenya, as well as a decorated military officer.

Eric was born in 1887. He was the son of Reverend George Sherbrooke Walker and his wife, Jessie Elizabeth Carter. After completing his education he became the personal secretary of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement. He was present at the first Scout Camp in 1908, and was one of the first two Boy Scouts inspectors.

He was an aviator, and served as a pilot for the Royal Air Force. He kept a journal, dated 1915, which has information on his flights and aeroplanes during battles in World War One. The journal is held in the National Archives (see EHC208/M1227 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/c/F80379).

Eric Walker married Lady Elizabeth Mary Feilding, the daughter of Rudolph Feilding, 9th Earl of Denbigh, on 26 July 1926.

He is remembered as the host of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when they visited Treetops in 1952, shortly before receiving news of the death of King George VI and Elizabeth's accession to the throne. He wrote, and had published, a book entitled "Treetops Hotel" in 1962.

He passed away in 1976.[1]
