Biography

Margaret Wade was christened on February 28, 1747 in the parish church of Gainford, County Durham, England. Margaret Wade belonged to a prosperous farming family with considerable capital, and were strict Methodists.[1] It has been surmised that the Wades were originally from Ingleton - a village within Staindrop Parish - where Margaret's father Robert owned land, but this has not been documented. Margaret married Robert Colpitts on February 10, 1768 in the parish church of Gainford, Durham, England.[2]

Robert Colpitts found land for the family on the Petitcodiac River in 1775, but the family could not move there due to the turmoil of the American Revolution.[3] The family arrived in Halifax in the spring of 1783.[4] Robert and his two oldest sons walked overland from Halifax, while Margaret and the rest of the family arrived later by ship. The Coverdale site was already occupied, so the Colpitts moved on to Little River in Albert County, 5 miles above where it empties into the Petitcodiac.[5] By 1784, the family resided in Colpitts Settlement. Margaret died on October 11, 1794 in Little River in Coverdale Parish,[6] and is buried in the Colpitts Community Cemetery, Colpitts Settlement, Albert, New Brunswick.[7]
