Biography
George Vine was born in 1919, in Toxteth Park district, Lancashire.[1][2]
In August 1939, George gave evidence at an inquest into the death of a carter, Charles Wilfred Upton, at Wallcrouch, between Wadhurst and Ticehurst in Sussex. At the time George was living at 41a Robertson Street, Hastings, and was a newspaper reporter. [3]
In April 1949, George and a second journalist, Graham Jenkins, were detained for 20 hours at the Nationalist garrison headquarters in China, after Chinese authorities objected to their published press coverage.[4][5] It's suggested that the pair had been sentenced to death,[1][6] before Clyde Farnsworth was able to secure their release.[7]
George was married to Maggi and the couple lived in Fairlight, Sussex.[1]
George died on 19 December 2016 in Sussex, England, aged 97 years.[1][8]
