Major General Tim Vincent CB AM OBE was a senior officer in the Australian Army, seeing active service during the Second World War and the Vietnam War. He was actively involved in defence-related issues in his retirement and served as a chairperson of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) prior to his death.

Douglas 'Tim' Vincent, the son of William Vincent and Sarah Anderson, was born on 10th March 1916 in Corinda, Queensland, Australia. [1] In 1921 the family was living in Merewether, in Newcastle, New South Wales. Tim was educated at Brisbane State High School.
On 31st July 1947 Tim married Margaret 'Sue' Persse, a fabric designer whom he had met prior to the war, in Christ Church, South Yarra, Victoria. [2]
Graduating from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in December 1938 into the (Royal Australian) Corps of Signals, Tim volunteered for service in the Second Australian Imperial Force soon after the outbreak of the Second World War and subsequently served in Syria, Western Europe and Borneo. In Europe he was involved in both the D-Day Normandy Landings and in the Battle of Arnhem. [3] In the Queen's Birthday Honours 1958 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). [4] Later, he served as Commander Australian Force Vietnam (COMAFV) during the Vietnam War. [5] Tim was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) for his valuable service in Vietnam. [6] From 1968 to 1970 he was head of the Australian Joint Services Staff in Washington DC. He retired from the Army in 1973, upon attaining his 57th birthday.
After retirement, Tim's business interests included a directorship of the telecommunications company Alcatel Australia Ltd (1973-93).
A qualified military pilot, Vincent took a keen interest in the development of Army Aviation and became honorary colonel of the Australian Army Aviation Corps.
Tim also worked very hard for veteran welfare through the Returned and Services League (RSL), for which he was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours 1994. [7]
Aged 79 years, Tim passed away on 8th October 1995 in Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory. He was survived by his wife Margaret and their three children and three grandchildren.
His memorial is at St John the Baptist Cemetery, Reid, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. [8]
