Biography

Isham Vest was born on March 12, 1768 in Bedford, Virginia, son of William Tunwell Vest (~1735–<1812) and Lucretia Alford (~1737–~1812).

Isham (22) married Frances Briggs (20) (born about 1770 in North Carolina) on March 10, 1791 in Stokes, North Carolina. Their children were:

Isham (27) married Nancy Pledge (20) (born on December 22, 1774 in Goochland Co., Virginia) on June 13, 1795 in Stokes, North Carolina. Their son was Francis Pledge Vest (~1802–~1860).

Isham died in 1845 in Tobaccoville, Forsyth, North Carolina, United States, aged 76.

If Isam/Isom/Isham Vest was born in 1768 he seems old to have served as a private in the War of 1812. Was this perhaps a son? The record does not provide any information such as state of enlistment or age.

He is likely the man in the 1800 ("United States Census, 1800," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHRD-7NQ : accessed 7 May 2023), Isham Vest, Salisbury, Stokes, North Carolina, United States; citing p. 574, NARA microfilm publication M32, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 32; FHL microfilm 337,908.) and 1810 U.S. Censuses ("United States Census, 1810", database with images, FamilySearch (ark:/61903/1:1:XH2V-Q9C : Mon Mar 13 14:39:38 UTC 2023), Entry for Isham Vest, 1810.) The 1810 census image is for the agricultural census, not the population census, so no ages or family members shown.

According to the 1800 census he was between 26 and 44 in 1800 and had six children, so if this is the man married to "Nanzey" in 1795, she was not the mother of most of his children.

There is no image available on line for the 1795 marriage bond for Isom/Isham Vest, but the name is transcribed as "Nanzey Page" not "Pledge". There is no image of a bond for this marriage in the Stokes County marriage bonds for this time period; it only seems to exist in an index so may be transcribed incorrectly
