William was the son of Eustace de Vescy and Margaret, illegitimate daughter of William the Lion of Scotland.[1] He was a minor at the time of his father's death in 1216.[1] William Longespée was granted custody of him and his property, and the right to determine his marriage. William de Vescy received his inheritance on 16 May 1226, when he was about to marry William Longespée's daughter Isabel[1][2], so he may have come of age then, pointing to birth in about 1205.
Soon after 16 May 1226 he married Isabel.[1] They had no children.[1] She must have died before his second marriage, which was before 1244.
Before 1244 he married again, his second wife being Agnes de Ferrers.[1] They had at least two children:
William was knighted in 1229. The following year he took part in Henry III's expedition to Brittany.[1]
In 1235 and 1237 he accompanied King Alexander of Scotland and his wife Joan to the English court.[1]
In 1242 he was part of Henry III's expedition to Gascony. In 1245 he took fought in Wales. In 1253 he again accompanied Henry III to Gascony.[1]
William founded a Carmelite Priory at Hull, Northumberland.[1]

William died in Gascony shortly before 7 October 1253 and was buried at Watton Priory, Yorkshire.[1]
