Barend Janse (son of Jan Jans Verkerken) of New Utrecht and PA married 1689 to Rachel Vandergrift born 30 Aug 1664 in Manhattan. Her father was with the West India Co.

Barend (Benard) and Rachel settled in Bensalem, Bucks Co., PA as early as 1695. This was the same locality where the CARRELL's and many families of Van de Grifts lived. Barend was a member of the Dutch Church of Bensalem in 1710 and of Neshaminy Dutch Church in 1790.

While searching this family, the recorded will of Bernard Verkertk was found in the Bucks Co., PA records. It is recorded on pages 277 - 279 of the Wills of Bucks Co., PA. In it he names his children and gives the names of his daughter's husbands. Bernard signed by mark. No doubt he could read and write in Dutch but not in English. He left each of his daughters 4 pounds, but his son, Jacob was willed the plantation containing 206 acres. Bernard died 3 Dec 1739. Children: Jacob; John b: 2 Apr 1695; Mary m: Niels Boon; Constant m: James Fitchet; Dinah m: James Keirll (CARRELL); a daughter married an Underwood. She was deceased when her father made his will.

Will abstract Bucks Co PA, dated 29 May 1736, probate 3 Dec 1739. [2]

The History of Buck's Co. states that on 1 July 1697, Bernard purchased a tract of land in Bensalem adjoining his brother-in-law. [3]

VerKERK-5 and Verkerk-1 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. Thanks!
