Biography

George de Vere was the third son of John de Vere and Elizabeth Howard. He was born in about 1443, based on the fact that he was aged about 16 in 1459. [1]

He fought at the Battle of Barnet in April 1471 and was present with his brother Sir John de Vere at the seizure of St Michael's Mount, Cornwall in 1473. Along with brothers John and Thomas he was attainted in 1474; although this was reversed once Henry VII ascended the throne in 1485. [1] He was also made Chief Steward of St. Osyth's Priory, Essex.[2]

He is said to have married firstly, Margaret Talbot, sister and co-heir of Thomas Talbot, 2nd Viscount Lisle. [3]They had no children before her death in 1472. [4]

George married Margaret Stafford prior to 1487.[1] Their children included:

  • George de Vere. Died without issue in 1498.
  • John de Vere, 14th Earl of Oxford[5]
  • Ursula de Vere. Co-heir to her brother in 1526.
  • Elizabeth de Vere. Co-heir to her brother in 1526.
  • Dorothy de Vere. Co-heir to her brother in 1526. She died 7 February 1526/7.
  • Margaret

He left a will dated 21 August 1500 requesting burial in the church at Earls Colne, Essex. [1] He made bequests to and mentioned[6]:

  • my wife Margaret
  • my daughter Elizabeth
  • my daughter Margaret
  • my daughter Dorothy
  • my brother Lord John de Vere, Earl of Oxford
  • my cousin Richard Fitz Lewes, knt
  • Lord John Eyer, prior of the priory of Earls Colne
  • William Cooke, Doctor of the Decrees

In Dec 1502, he made some additions to his will:

  • my son John Vere

His will was probated on 3 April 1503.[1][6]
