Biography

Mary was the daughter of Theodore Verdety (or Verdity) and Elizabeth Porcher. She was underage when her father made his Will on 20 May 1720, leaving her the plantation called Whitehall.^[1]

Sometime before June 1739 she married Paul de St. Julien as his second wife. ^[2] In a Memorial dated 22 June 1739, Paul lists the land she had inherited from her father, and she also was the heir of her brother Theodore Verdety, who died without issue.^[3] Paul and his second wife Mary had a daughter:

After her husband's death, Mary married on July 11, 1745 Thomas Monck.^[4]He was born March 4, 1713, in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of Thomas Monck, 1688-1713 and Martha Aiken. Thomas' first wife was Joanna Broughton, a daughter of Colonel Thomas Broughton Lieutenant Governor of the State of South Carolina. Thomas lived at "Mitton Plantation" and it was on part of this property that became the first village known as Monck's Corner. The majority of the land known as "Mitton" was earlier bequeathed by Thomas Monck to his daughter Joanna Broughton Monck, who later married John Dawson on October 8, 1760. Joanna was a daughter of Thomas, by his first wife. ^[5]

When Thomas Monck wrote his Will on 2 April 1746, he stated that his wife's mother Elizabeth Verditty should be allowed to continue living on his plantation.^[6]

Mary Monck, widow of Thomas Monck, died about 5 December 1783.^[7]
