Biography

John came to Western Australia as part of Bishop Salvado's party on the John Panter, arriving on 15 August 1853.[1]

He left the Benedictine misson at New Norcia in April 1856 without taking vows. He was a tailor by trade but worked as a gardener at Kelmscott (1869-76 Almanac) and Harvey in 1880. He employed 46 Ticket of Leave men 1865-1873 as gardeners and labourers including also two carpenters in 1869. He owned Perth lots in 1865 and 1866 and leased 100 acres at Koonarup Brook. Bancell Road and Bancell Brook are named after him.[2][1]

John married Catherine Walsh on 23 January 1862 at Perth.[3][4]

On Mondy evening last Mr. John Bancells, an old settler, was found dead in his garden at Wagerup. He was last seen alive on Sunday after noon. Mr Bancells was originally con nected with the Spanish mission at New Norcia, but subsequently turned his attention to agriculture. The remains were on Wednesday forwarded to Pinjarrah for interment.[5]
