Research

Johanna Velte Bachtle was born on 15 June 1824 in Zainen, Calw, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, child of Georg Friedrich Velte and Rosine Keppler. Her father evidently died in Baltimore but no such document has been found. There are no further documents about Johanna. However, current DNA connections have made it extremely likely that she, or another of her sisters, was the wife of Johann Michael Baechtle. She is from the same area as he; he and his (probably) brother-in-law Christopher Hauff were in the milk business together when Baechtle came to Baltimore from Germany. It is possible that more information will come to light, but for the moment I am laying the mysterious and unsourced Rosina Dolman aside in favor of Johanna, who makes a myriad of DNA connections make sense.
