Biography

James Vance was born about 1848 in County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of Jane (Emmerson) Vance and John Vance.

The ship, Monteagle set sail from London, England on 21 December 1852 with the VANCE family from County Fermanagh, Ireland among the assisted immigrant passengers and arrived in Hobson's Bay, Colony of Victoria on 12 April 1853^[1][2]. The VANCE family consisted of parents, John (age 31, Labourer) and Jane (26) and their children, James (4) and infant, Mary. Unfortunately on 19 February 1853, Mary passed away on board the Monteagle on the voyage. On arrival in the colony, John VANCE was employed by Mr. R. LAWRENCE of Brighton for a term of 6 months with rations.

James married Matilda Colwell in 1873 in Brighton, Colony of Victoria^[3].

He died on 28 February 1908 in Maffra, Victoria, age 60^[4] and was buried at the Maffra Cemetery^[5]

VANCE.—On the 28th February, at his late residence, Maffra, Gippsland, James Vance, dearly beloved husband of Matilda Vance, aged 60 years. Deeply mourned.

OBITUARY.—We regret to chronicle the death of Mr James Vance, of "Willowvale," Maffra, which took place on 28th February. The "Maffra Spectator" writes :—" Looking at Mr Vance a few weeks ago, one would have given him a long lease of life, but a strain of the heart some time back caused the mischief, and suddenly a strong man was stricken down. He leaves a large family of children. The funeral was largely attended by sympathising mourners." We may add that the late Mr Vance was 60 years of age, and Mr J. Vance, of Morwell, who until recently resided at Calliguee, is a son of deceased.
