Biography

Evert Van Wagenen was born on April 12, 1681, to Jacob Aertsen Van Wagoner and Sara Pels. He was married in 1709 to Hillegond Van Heyningen. They lived in Dutchess County, New York, and had six children: Jacob, Sarah Gerrit, Janeken Maritjen, and Nicholas.[1]

Evert Van Wagenen: born 12 Apr 1681; married 1 Jun 1701 to Hillegond Vanheyringer: born 14 Nov 1686

As so many of the early names have become extinct I will say a word about the name Van Wagner. In Poughkeepsie, about 1730, settled Evert, son of Jacob Aertson, from Ulster County, the name being changed about this time. Evert's son, Nicholas, married Hester DeGraaf, daughter of Jan De Graaf, and built the stone house that is now standing and used as a garage in the town of Pleasant Valley. Nicholas had a son, Evert, who bought the Jesse Bell farm in about 1803 for his son, Gilbert. Gilbert married Catherine Schryver and Abraham, a cousin of Gilbert's, married Hannah Schryver, a sister of Catherine. They were daughters of John P. and Eleanor Van Benschoten Schryver. These were the ancestors of the numerous Van Wagner families of Hyde Park.[2]

There are at least 3 different Everts in the Van Wagenen family.

1. Evert Van Wagenen, second son of Gerrit Aartsen and Clara Pels, was born in 1675 in Kingston NY and he married Marytgen Van Heyningen in 1701.

2. This page's Evert Van Wagenen, second son of Jacob Aertsen and Sara Pels, was born 1681 in Kingston NY and he married Hillegont Van Heyningen about 1709. Lived in Poughkeepsie, NY. It is know that Jacob and Gerrit were brothers and they married Pels sisters. Van_Wagenen-77

3. Evert Van Wagenen, son of Nicholas Van Wagenen (Nicholas son of Evert and Hillegont) born 1713 and he married Hester De Graff. He died about 1769. Lived in Poughkeepsie NY. So Grandpa Evert had a grandson Evert. Van_Wagenen-404

The Marritjen marriage of 1701 should be removed from this Evert Van_Wagenen-77 of 1681 as that marriage is to the Evert of the Gerrit line. The record of the 1709 marriage to Hillegont is so far not found and Dutch records of the time appear incomplete but

This may well also be Evert.

History of Dutchess County New York, Frank Hasbrouck 1909. Page 80 (scan 110 of 1077).

Evert Van Wagene(n) being listed in "A List of the Military Foorses V'L" as of November 21, 1715.

The Evert Aer(t)sen listen is a cousin of his as well.

Very interesting find today. Pretty sure this is a new source for my great grandfather Evert in 1712.

New source, "Poughkeepsie, the origin and meaning of the word." By Helen Wilkinson Reynolds 1924. Page 57 (scan 83 of 122). See also page 81 for a copy of the census of Dutchess County, N. Y., for 1714, published in Doc. Hist, of New York, 1: 240. The list names "Swart" who is Evert according to the book, identifiable as resident in the township of Poughkeepsie in 1714.

https://archive.org/details/poughkeepsieorig01reyn/page/82/mode/2up

Evert Van Wagenen took title in 1712 to land between the Hudson and the Post Road in the vicinity of the National Biscuit Company. He probably came from Rhinebeck and the name “Swart” on the census list may be taken as a clerical error. Extraction: Dutch.

Wagenen-10 and Van Wagenen-77 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

Van Wagoner-48 and Wagenen-10 appear to represent the same person because: Reversing order as requested (I think.)
Wagenen-10 and Van Wagoner-48 are not ready to be merged because: Please reverse the merge, van Wagonen into van Wagenen, then approval will follow. Thank you for the great work!

Wagenen-10 and Van Wagoner-48 appear to represent the same person because: Birth date and christening date line up, common different spelling of the name, same wife (again, one choosing to include the "Von" appellation and the other not.)
