Biography

Arnold Joost van Keppel was baptized in Zutphen on January 30, 1670 [1] , Earl of Albermarle, was an English-Dutch nobleman who as a favorite of William III of Orange-Nassau acquired a prominent position and great wealth.

This descendant of a Gelderland family studied in Cambridge. He ended up as a page in the entourage of William III, with whom he made the trip to England in 1688. In 1690 he was also admitted as a chambersquire (Groom of the Bedchamber) in the English royal court. From about 1693 he was seen as the great rival of Hans Willem Bentinck, the favorite of William III. In May 1695 he was appointed Master of the Robes, for which he received the substantial income of £ 2,000 per year. Moreover, he moved into Kensington Palace.

After the death of the King-Stadholder, in 1702, he left England and returned to the Republic. As a Dutch general he was involved in the campaigns in the Spanish Succession War. In 1712 he was taken prisoner in Denain. On May 30, 1718 he died in The Hague, 48 years old.

Arnold Joost van Keppel is gedoopt in Zutphen op 30 januari 1670 [1], graaf van Albermarle, was een Engels-Nederlandse edelman die als gunsteling van Willem III van Oranje-Nassau een vooraanstaande positie en grote rijkdom verwierf.

Deze telg uit een Gelderse familie studeerde in Cambridge. Hij kwam als page in de entourage van Willem III terecht, met wie hij in 1688 de reis naar Engeland maakte. In 1690 werd hij als kamerjonker (Groom of the Bedchamber) eveneens opgenomen in de Engelse koninklijke hofhouding. Vanaf ongeveer 1693 werd hij gezien als de grote rivaal van Hans Willem Bentinck, de favoriet van Willem III. In mei 1695 werd hij benoemd tot Master of the Robes, waarvoor hij het aanzienlijke inkomen van £ 2.000 per jaar ontving. Bovendien nam hij zijn intrek in Kensington Palace.

He ging in 1701 in ondertrouw in Zutphen[2] [3].

Na de dood van de koning-stadhouder, in 1702, verliet hij Engeland en keerde terug naar de Republiek. Als Nederlands generaal was hij betrokken bij de veldtochten in de Spaanse Successieoorlog. In 1712 werd hij gevangen genomen in Denain. Op 30 mei 1718 overleed hij in Den Haag, 48 jaar oud.
