Victoria, also known as "Victoria Alice Leopoldine Princess zu Hohenlohe Langenburg", Victoria Alice Leopoldine Ada Laura Seymour, and Lady Valda Machell, was born on the 28th November 1886 in London, England. [1] [2]
Victoria's parents were Victor zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, also known as Victor Ferdinand Franz Eugen Gustaf Adolf Constantin Friedrich zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1833–1891), and Laura Williamina (Seymour) Gleichen (1832–1912). [2]
Victoria had three siblings:
Lady Victoria Alice Leopoldine Ada Laura Gleichen, daughter of Viktor Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Lady Laura Wilhelmina Seymour, married Lt Col. Percy Wilfred Machell CMG DSO on the 5th of December 1905, in the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, London, in the presence of King Edward VII. [3] [4]
An article in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Monday, December 4, 1905, published a section about "Royal Arrangements" including visiting the wedding, on page 6. [5]
Lady Valda's husband, Percy, inherited the Machell ancestral home, Crackenthorpe Hall, Westmorland, when his uncle, James Octavius Machell, 'The Captain', died in 1902, having had no children. [6]
Sadly, Percy was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, in 1916. [7]
It was reported in the Accrington Observer, on Saturday, August 11, 1928, that Lady Valda had sold the Crackenthorpe Hall Estate, because of "the maintenance costs and circumstances at the time". [8]
Victoria (Valda) died in London, England, on the 10th September 1951. She left a will, and probate was granted on the 1st of December 1951 in London; to her son Roger Victor Machell. [9]
Victoria was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium, Golders Green, London Borough of Barnet, Greater London, England. There is a memorial plaque with the inscription:
