Biography

Arent Isaacs was born in Hooksiel, Oldenburg, Germany. On 19 January 1652 he was registered in Amsterdam, North Holland as "Arent Ysaacx from Hoecksiel" registered as a "Poorter" (a Burgher), listed as having the occupation "Schoenmaker" (Dutch for shoemaker).[1] [2]

Arent Isacksen and Sara van der Kliet entered their banns of marriage in Amsterdam, Nederland, on 30 March 1652. She was age 22 and he was age 28. Their banns note (in translation) "Arent Ysackss from Hoeksijl, living on Dijckstraet, a shoemakers helper, 28 years old, with no parents present. and Sara van der Kliet of Amsterdam, living on Anjeliersstraat. 22 years old, assisted by her father Pieter van de Kliet.” [3] There are no identified children from this marriage.

Occupation

Migration

Isaac Aertsen migrated to New Amsterdam with his second wife, Geertje Everts, just a few months after their marriage banns were recorded 29 January 1655 in Amsterdam. They apparently came on the Dutch ship "de Bonte Koe." (the Spotted Cow) sailed from Amsterdam after April 19 1655, and arrived New Amsterdam before 12 July 1655.[4] [5] [6]

Residences

Almost immediately after his arrival, Arent Isaacszen contributed to a tax for the construction of a defensive wall, as did the "Skipper of the Spotted Cow." [7] Isaac and Geertje Everts' first daughter Vrowtje was born in New Amsterdam.

Geertje Everts had four more children in Beverwijk and died there, possibly related to childbirth, as in Jan 1664 Isaac requested of the Beverwqijk Dutch Church a wet nurse for his infant daughter. [8]

In the Spring or summer of 1664 the Family returned to New Amsterdam, where they remained thereafter.

5 Sep 1664: Arent Isaacqs was a signator to the "Remonstrance of the People of New Netherland to the Director General and Council" a petition to surrender New Amsterdam to the English. [9]

(21, 22, 24, or 26) OCT 1664 Arent Isaackzen took the Oath of Allegiance to the King of Great Britain, James, Duke of York, New York City. [10]

1665: Arent Isaacszen married Styntie Laurens in English New York, and they had five more children there.

1676: Arent Isaacsen and family to the settlement of Breuckelen (Brooklyn), where Arent Isaak appears on an assessment roll in September. It is unclear how long they lived there. [11]

20 April 1682: Styntie Laurens died suddenly in Esopus, Ulster, New York. An investigation was held, wherein Isaak was ordered call upon Almighty God to show a sign if he were guilty of her death; no such sign appearing, he was freed. [12]

16 Aug 1685: Arent Isacszen married his fourth wife, Lysbeth Stevens, widow of Otto Laurenzen at New York City.

Research Notes

LNAB

I am revising his LNAB to Isacksen, which is the name recorded for him at his first marriage in Amsterdam (the earliest church record we have for him). I have seen no evidence (at least not yet) that he was ever recorded with a surname of van Hoeck or any variant spelling of Van Hook, so that will be an "Other Last Name." Migration Date

A migration date of Arent Isaacszen for 1645 was previously posted on this Profile, which is not possible given the original documentation on this Profile that clearly shows Isaac Arentszen in Amsterdam North Holland in 1652, prior to departing for New Amsterdam.
