Pieter van Halen (a.k.a. van Hael, van Aalen, van Alen, and other variant spellings) was baptized in Utrecht in the Netherlands on 22 June 1623. His parents were Barent van Halen and his wife Annetje. [1] According to Innes Getty, he was baptized at the Jacobi Church in Utrecht June 22, 1623, a son of Barend Adamsz van Halen and Anneke Fermansdr (van Bijler).[2]
Pieter was a shoemaker.[3]
His first wife was Weyntje(n) More (a.k.a. Morre(n) or Marren). They obtained a marriage license in Utrecht on 16 April 1654, and their marriage was announced in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, on 23 April 1654.[4] According to the record, Pieter was of Utrecht, but both Pieter and Weyntje were living in Amsterdam, and neither Pieter nor Weyntje had married previously.[5] Also a permit for the marriage in Amsterdam on 30 April 1654 was given in Utrecht [6][7]
Children from this marriage baptized in Amsterdam were Anna (baptized 28 February 1655) [8] and Jan (baptized 10 November 1656)[9]
Pieter van Halen from Utrecht emigrated to New Netherland with his wife and two young children (ages 1 and 3) in May 1658 aboard De Vergulde Bever.[10][11] Another New Netherland settler by the name of Pieter van Alen arrived at about the same time and was recorded in Beverywyck (now Albany, New York) in 1660.[12] Evidence that these are two different men and not the same person is found in a 1662 Kingston (New York) record of Pieter van Halen acknowledging a debt to Pieter van Alen.[13]
Pieter van Halen and family settled at first in New Amsterdam. On 12 December 1658, he was sued by Hendrik Jansen Swit for the rent of a house there. Pieter claimed that the house was in such poor repair that it was no longer habitable, but he ultimately settled the matter by agreeing to pay sixty florins in zewant. A daughter, Elizabeth, was baptized in the Dutch Church in New Amsterdam on 28 March 1659. Sponsor for the baptism was Adrian van Laer, a fellow passenger on De Vergulde Bever.[14]
By the spring of 1661, Pieter van Halen had removed to Kingston, where on 2 May 1661 he drew lot No. 9 in the village of Wiltwyck. His name appears in Kingston court records from 1661 through early 1663.[15] Barent, son of Pieter van Aalen and Weyntjen Morren, was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church in Kingston, New York, on 11 June 1662.[16] The wife of Pieter van Hael (an alternate spelling of van Alen) was "shot and burnt in her house" during the June 1663 Indian attack on Wildwyck (the place later known as Kingston).[17]
After the loss of his wife and his house in the attack on Wildwyck, Pieter apparently returned to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where on 16 November 1663 Pieter [van] Halen, previously married to Wijntje Moore, recorded intentions to marry Jacelijn Postel, who had earlier been married to Frans Elias Dreunen.[18] That marriage may not have occurred, because on 18 October 1664 another record of intentions to marry was filed for Pieter [van] Halen, previous wife identified as Weijntje Morre. This time the intended bride was Jannetje Willems. [19]
Pieter's parents were Barent/Barend Van Halen (Van_Halen-41) and Anneken Van Biljer (other spellings too).
