Maria was born between March 1328 and May 1329.[1] She married with papal dispensation that was issued on November 24, 1362 with Wilhelm II van Gulik (Jülich).[1] She passed away November 1397.[1]
When her brother Reinald III, Duke of Gelre, died in 1371 without a heir, she and her husband claimed the Duchess of Gelre as their inheritance for their son Wilhelm III van Gulik. Her sister Mechteld married Jan van Blois and also claimed it.[1][2][3][4][5] This started the Gelre Succsion War (1371-1379).[6]
In 1377 when Wilhelm III van Gulik married Catharina van Beieren, there was a peace agreement signed by many lords and knights with Mechteld van Gelre and Jan van Blois.[7] However the war continued and ended in 1379 when the troops of Willhem III van Gulik defeated the troops of Mecheld van Gelre and Jan van Blois at a Battle near Hönnepel.[8]
