Death & Funeral

On Sunday, 27 Aug 1893 at the home of his father-in-law, William Logan Porter. Lewis Vaden died from typhoid fever. He was 32 years old. The obituary notice does not explicitly state where his remains were laid to rest.

"Mr. Vaden’s Death. This well-known Contractor Passes Away in Manchester. Typhoid Fever the Cause – Personal and other items from the South Side of the James. Mr. Lewis Vaden, a well known civil engineer and contractor died Sunday afternoon [27 Aug 1893] at the residence of his father-in-law, Mr. W. L. Porter, in Manchester. Typhoid Fever was the cause of death and the deceased had been sick only about three weeks. Deceased was a son of Mr. Michael Vaden, of Clover Hill, Chesterfield County, and was 32 years of age. He was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. Mr. Vaden married Miss Kate Porter of this city about four years ago and she, with two small children, survives him. Deceased was a man of the highest integrity and was universally popular. The funeral took place from Central Methodist Church yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. W. C. “Mr. Louis Vaden, a nephew of Rev. W. C. Vaden and a well-known young man to many of our people, died last Monday in Manchester, from typhoid fever.” .........etc ............ "Rev. W. C. Vaden, of Manchester, a former pastor of the Methodist Church here, came up from his home last Wednesday and at night conducted prayer meeting. During the course of Mr. Vaden’s remarks he feelingly alluded to his pastorate among this people, and said that in no charge he had ever had did he become so strongly attached by the cords of love to the hearts of its people, as to those in Farmville. He said it was a positive pleasure to be among a people so cordial. Kate Cox Porter Vaden Remarried

On 6 Sept 1905 the 36-year-old widow, Kate C. Vaden, married a childhood friend, 28-year-old Wortley Fuller Rudd. In Jan 1903 Kate's brother, Robert Burke Porter, had been killed by a train. Wortley was a friend of her brother and was asked to be a pallbearer at his funeral.

Together Kate and Wortley had only 1 known child, a son, Wortley Fuller Rudd Jr., (9 July 1906 - 22 July 1906).

"Rudd – Vaden. Mr. W. F. Rudd and Mrs. Kate C. Vaden were married at 7:30 o’clock yesterday morning at the residence of the bride, No. 120 Cowardin Ave. Rev. C. O. Woodward, pastor of the Cowardin Avenue Christian Church, was the celebrant. The marriage, quiet on account of recent bereavement in the family of the bride, was witnessed only by the immediate families most interested. Mr. and Mrs. Rudd left shortly after the ceremony for an extended trip through the South. Much interest was felt in this wedding because of the prominence and popularity of both bride and groom. Mrs. Rudd, a native of Chesterfield County, only daughter of Mr. W. L. Porter, has all her life been notably popular. Mr. Rudd, also of Chesterfield, a B.A. graduate of Richmond College, was formerly assistant principle of the Manchester school and is now a successful teacher in the Richmond High School. "Widow of Dean of Pharmacy School Dies. Mrs. Kate Rudd was Chesterfield Native. Mrs. Kate Porter Vaden Rudd, widow of Dr. Wortley F. Rudd, died Tuesday at her home, 1614 Park Ave. A funeral service will be held at the grave in Maury Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Rudd was born at Winterpock, Chesterfield County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Logan Porter. Her late husband Dr. Rudd was dean emeritus of the School of Pharmacy of the Medical College of Virginia. Mrs. Rudd’s first husband, Lewis Vaden, died many years ago. Mrs. Rudd is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Nannie Vaden Fitton, of Hamilton, Ohio; six grandchildren, Mrs. Sydney Swann Jr., of Petersburg; Robert R. Gwathmey III, of Hanover, VA., Lieutenant Cyrus Fitton, United States Navy, and Miss Kate porter Fitton, Dan W. Fitton Jr., and Vaden Fitton, all of Hamilton, and five great-grandchildren. Hanover, VA Oct 31 – Funeral rites for Mrs. Mary Vaden Gwathmey, wife of Robert Ryland Gwathmey, Jr., who died Sunday at her home here, were held Monday afternoon in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. Mrs. Gwathmey, long active in civil and social affairs in Hanover County, was a native of Richmond and was educated at the old Woman’s College, of Richmond and at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Lynchburg. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Sydney C. Swann, Jr., of Petersburg; one son, R. R. Gwathmey III, Commonwealth’s attorney of Hanover County, her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Mr. Clarence Vaden, who for so long was associated with Mr. Augustine Royall in the real estate business, and who is one of the most popular and progressive young men in Manchester, has retired from the real estate business, and will devote all of his time to the interest of the Manchester Bank.”

Robert Burke Porter

“The funeral of Mr. Robert [Burke] Porter took place from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Porter at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The Rev. H. H. Moore, of the Cowardin Avenue Christian church conducted the service and the body was laid to rest in Maury Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Charles M. Graves, Bruce Ashbrook, Thomas Turpin, William Robinson, Wortley Rudd, and H. G. Carter. The death of Mr. Porter was a great blow to his many friends in Manchester and Richmond. Letters were found on his person immediately after he was killed at Widewater [Stafford, VA], last Saturday. It was through a letter from Mr. Porter’s mother that the railroad authorities located his home. Owing to the absence of the county coroner, Mr. W. M.
