Ethelda Runnalls Uren served her country in WWI
Ethelda undertook her Oath of Service on 23 Aug 1915 in Keswick, South Australia, Australia and again on 27th Sept 1916. According to her service records Ethelda was appointed to the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) on 27th Sept 1916; However, her service records also indicate that Ethelda served as a Principal Matron, 23 May 1915 to 21 May 1917 with the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS).
Contained within Ethelda's service records are notations pertaining to Medals Awarded for Service to the Australian Imperial Forces.
Of particular interest is the Base Records Office correspondence dated 15th Apr 1920 which states that Matron Ethelda Runnalls Uren has been awarded the Royal Red Cross Decoration (1st Class). The correspondence continues to state "His Majesty THE KING has been graciously pleased to ward the Royal Red Cross to the undermentioned Lady of the Nursing Services in Recognition of her valuable services with the British Forces in Salonika" (promulgated in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No. 33 dated 1st April 1920). In addition to the above stated medal, Ethelda also received a British War Medal, Star and Victory Medal. With respect to Ethelda's British Medal, correspondence dated 14th Feb 1922 is contained within in her service records. A copy of the stated correspondence is contained within the photo section.
Upon review and analysis of Ethelda's service records it appears that she embarked upon numerous ships including: - RMS Khiva on 29th May 1917 prior to return to Port Adelaide on 31st; only then to leave Adelaide on 6th June 1917 in order to embark on RMS Mooltan in Sydney on 9th June 1917.
On 30th July 1917 Ethelda left HQ Cairo on Hooltan for Suez; on 8th Aug 1917 Ethelda embarked for Salonika on the Huntsgreen (Ex Alexandria, Egypt); On 22 Aug 1918 Ethelda embarked on the Gorgon from Salonkia At A'dri St.
Finally, it is noted that Ethelda disembarked from Guyon from Salonika in Alexandria on 30th August 1918.
Ethelda was terminated from the AANS on the 20th Nov 1918 by her Lt. Colonel and embarked on HT Wilshire at Suez for Australia).[1]
