Biography

Information on Christian comes from "Ancestry of Eva Bell Kempton" citing parish records and wills as primary sources.[1]

Christian was the wife of William Green of Toppesfield, Essex. She first married Thomas Bateman who was buried in Toppesfield on 10 Jul 1591. Unfortunately marriage records for Toppesfield in this period don't survive. Smith & Sanborn note that Bateman may have had a prior wife as there were children baptized to a man of this name between 1580 and 1585 at Toppesfield and he pre-deceased Christian by about 50 years.

With Bateman she had at least 2 known children:

  1. Samuel born about 1589, married 8 Aug 1611 Mary Berdin
  2. Susan christened in Toppesfield 28 Mar 1591, married there on 13 May 1615 Richard Gips. Christian bequeathed to her grand-daughter Susan Gips in her 1642 will, helping prove that this Susan who married Richard was the daughter of Christian.

With Green she had:

  2. William 20 Feb 1596/97 died young[3]
  3. William 1 Oct 1598 m. Mary Livermore[4]
  4. Thomas, 4 Feb 1599/1600, m. Elizabeth Unknown[5]

Death & Estate

Christian was listed in William's will of 1631. In her own will of 1642 as a widow she bequeathed to children William Green Elizabeth Fitches (also called this name in William's will) and Samuel Bateman and to grandchildren Samuel & Mary Bateman among others. She also bequeathed to grandchild Susan Gipps. She did not mention son Thomas, one possibility is that he was already in New England by this time (he was known to be in Lynn, Massachusetts by 1644 per his own deposition and was possibly there earlier).

A burial record has not been found but likely it was shortly after will of 15 Apr 1642.
