Biography

It is estimated, by her presence as the spouse of John Russell in 1642/3, that Dorothy (___) was born about 1615-25, probably in England.

Dorothy (___) was the wife of John Russell of Marshfield, Massachusetts. They were of Marshfiedl as early as 1642/3. In 1661, her husband John bought land at Dartmouth, Massachusetts from Miles Standish, where they remained until there deaths. [1] [2]

Dorothy Russell, wife of John died at Dartmouth on December 18, 1687. [3] [4]

Her husband John died there on February 13, 1695. [4]

His will was dated on January 19, 1687/8 and named:

  • sons John, Jonathan and Joseph
  • grandson Jonathan, son of Jonathan
  • grandson John, son of Joseph [5]

On April 2, 1695, John Russell posted bond, and was ordered by the court to present and inventory of John Russell's seniors estate by April, 1696. [6]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents and Last Name: A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that Dorothy was the daughter of Roland Cotton and Mary Hurlbert, whose children are documented and include no daughter Dorothy.[citation needed]

Last name Crowder: An earlier version of this profile also claimed a maiden name of Crowder, citing a Bishops transcript that needs checking: 29 August 1637 Saint Peter's Church, Staffordshire, England[10] This couple had a son John in 1638[11] More evidence would be needed to connect this record with the immigrants.

Confused Death Dates Many of the cited articles have confused the death dates in this family, particularly husband John and John jr. I believe this may be from conversion of dates using [2:13:16xx] format, so I have used what is in the Dartmouth VR

Daughter Mary. Some articles suggest that the Mary, the wife of John Cornell was the daughter of John and Dorothy See: TAG24 and Austin's Genealogical Dictionary or RI. p.55 while NEHGR58 does not list her as their child. John Russell Sr only mentioned sons in his will

Unsourced birth date: 14 Nov 1611 was removed as her date of birth ad her origins are unknown.

Per all the other comments, looks like this should be a profile for Dorothy Unknown, the wife of Joseph Russell of Dartmouth.

I have done what I could with PGM needs research and added bio/sources. I can't find any source for her LNAB, only Dorothy (___). I believe we should remove the parents.

I agree the parents should be removed and her name should be changed to Dorothy Unknown. The marriage date should be removed it belongs to Dorothy Crowder and John Russell, who are probably not this couple. She may not be PGM, at least I'm sure we can't prove it.

The earliest mention I found was of Marshfield 1642/3. Not much out there.

We keep going back and forth about her origins. For those who insist that she was the daughter of John Cotton and Elizabeth Horrocks, please provide a source or review of the evidence that supports this identification. Otherwise she should be merged into Unknown-7644.

CORRECTION: Unknown-7644 appears to have married a different John Russell.

Initial cleanup and parental detachment accomplished.

I'm aware that there is another Dorothy who married another (?) John Russell. See the link to Dorothy Unknown Near top of narrative.

Before we change her LNAB I'd like someone to review the Bishops transcript record for the 1637 marriage between John Russell and Dorothy Crowder.

Then we need to find their earliest record in New England.

Lastly, for now, there are several profile managers associated with this profile who have not responded to earlier inquiries about this profile. Please consider "downgrading" to Trusted List if you want to follow this profile but not actively engage in its research. Thank you.

"The Descendants of John Russell..." and "Colonial Families of the USA Vol 3" both list Dorothy's maiden name as unknown as does the marriage source listed on this profile. If it is Cotton, Crowder or unknown may never be known. Link to parents should be removed as current father's profile does not note her as a daughter. All of the links to the Ancestry.com trees should be removed, none of them link to anything and I've not found a link to another tree to date that cites a source other than another tree. I have Dorothy as "Cotton" on my personal tree though end the line there.

I have for Dorothy Cotton...father is Roland Cotton II. b. 01 Mar 1586/87 Derby, Derbyshire, England Died: 23 December 1652, Ipswich, Essex, MA USA. The one in the outline is possibly a Roland from an earlier generation.... maybe he is Roland I, father of Dorothy's father. Dates do not make sense the way the WikiTree outline is stated.

I should also add that there doesn't appear to be any evidence that either John Russell or his wife Dorothy is PGM.

I have added a source for the marriage of John Russell and Dorothy Unknown. Either a new profile for Dorothy Unknown needs to be created or this profile needs an LNAB change and parents disconnected. I agree that this profile appears to be the result of bad merges.

Dorothy (Cotton) Smith was born in New Hampshire and died there. Her parents were not those attached.

There is no proof that Rowland Cotton and Mary Hurlbert had a daughter named Dorothy.

There is a claim of a marriage record for Dorothy Crowder and John Russell in Staffordshire, England but there is no proof that it relates to this couple.

Does this profile just need to go away, entirely?

The sources all appear to be Ancestry.com links, which is to say, nothing. Including a dozen rows and lat-longs just makes more false-specificity. Either we have actual primary sources, or we have nothing...

The implication of the profile as it stands today is that we're 100% sure she's a Cotton (because she's Cotton-662) at birth; and we're implying she MUST have married a Crowder AND a Russell, or that we're sure Crowder is a typo for Cotton. None of this makes sense, enough, to me, to leave it as-is. She should probably be detached from the Cottons unless there is a source, and "belong" to Russell as some kind of NN wife.

Thoughts?

Parents seem to be wrong: father was dead before birth, and places do not match.

I detached this Dorothy from supposed husband Henry Smith. The Dorothy who first married Henry Smith and later married a John Russell as her second husband was a different woman. See http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/227592/is-this-profile-the-victim-of-a-bad-merge-of-wives
