Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Sarah Underwood was a Virginia colonist.

Sarah Underwood was born in 1740 in Fauquier County, Virginia.[1] Her parents may have been William Underwood, Sr. and his wife Rebecca.[citation needed]

In 1759, she married John Ferguson Hammett, Sr. in Virginia.[2] This is a partial list of their children:[1]

  1. Mary Jane (1760-1843)
  2. James (1761-1860)
  3. John Ferguson (1761-1834)
  4. George (1761-1840)
  5. Elizabeth (1763-1822)
  6. Sarah (1765-1850)
  7. Jessie (1768-1818_
  8. Ellender (1774-1859)
  9. Mary Polly (1775-1845)

Their children were born in Virginia, before the war. By 1790, the Hammets had moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina.[3]

Sarah died on 12 Jan 1820,[1] according to a letter from John to his son George, living in Nova Scotia. "I must inform you than your dear mother I hope is gone to Heaven. She parted this life the 12th day of Jan. 1820. She got up in the morning and dressed herself and sat down in a chair and died without any complaint."[4]
