Suspected census errors

John Umphlet appears in Northampton County on the 1830 Federal Census.[5] However, there are no marks indicating the ages of any family members - even for John himself - usually when a lone person is in a household, a hash mark is made to indicate that persons age. In this case there are no marks at all. It appears that the census taker forgot to enter the marks for John and his family.

John Umphlet appears in Richland, Clinton, Ohio, on the 1850 Census. His occupation is listed as a grocer.[6]

John is also is listed as a "Mulatto" on this census. Unless this is a different John, the census record is incorrect.[7] John's daughter Nancy Savage (Umphlet) Wiles was also married in Clinton County, Ohio. Additionally, there is no other John Umphlet/ret, who is a Mulatto, in the 1840 or 1860 Census of Clinton County, Ohio nor in any records found at the time of this writing. It is most likely that the John listed in this census is the same as this profile and the census taker made an error (as they so often did). In the box right next to race is "sex" on the census form is the box for race. There are two identical "M" markings, one in either box. It is possible that the census taker made a double mark, marking an "M" for "married" twice by mistake.
