Biography

William Earle was born in 1813, son of Thomas George Tyndale & Mary Anne. He was baptised on 22 April 1813 in Swallowfield, Berkshire, England.^[1] His mother was the daughter of the rector of Holton.

William married Elizabeth Carey Sandeman (daughter of George Glas Sandeman, merchant) on 2 October 1850 in St James, Paddington, Westminster, England.^[2]

In 1866, following the death of his maiden aunt Frances Letitia (Earle) Biscoe William inherited the Holton Park estate in Oxfordshire, which had been purchased by his great uncle Elisha Biscoe in 1800. As a condition of the inheritance William changed his surname by royal license to Biscoe: "The Queen has granted to William Earle Tyndale, of Holton Park, Oxfordshire, Esq., in the Commission of the Peace, and a Deputy-Lieutenant for the said county, Her Royal licence to take the surname of Biscoe only. " ^[3]

In the 1881 census William (age 68) was living at Holton Park, Holton, Oxfordshire, England with 2 of his children and a number of servants. His wife was not present in the household on census day. ^[4]

William died in 1895 and was buried in Holton, Oxfordshire. ^{[5] [6] [7]}

Research notes

Following the inheritance of the Holton Park estate William Tyndale changed his surname to Biscoe. From records of his burial, probate and also contemporanous mentions in the local press it would appear that he used Biscoe alone as his surname from this date (and this is what was permitted by the royal license). Nevertheless, at some point his offspring began to use the 2 names together as a double-barrelled name i.e. 'Tyndale-Biscoe', it is unclear exactly when this change was made. On the 1871 census the whole family is listed just as Biscoe. Ar his death in 1895 the name by which he is identified on his death cetificate (which was completed in accordance with information provided by his son George William Tyndale-Biscoe who is stated to have been present at the death) is "William Earle Biscoe"
