Edward was the son of Royall Tyler and Mary Palmer.
Husband of 1. Ann Murdock 1808–1830 (m. 1828) and 2. Sarah Ann Boardman 1806–1891 (married 10 July 1831)
Graduated Yale College with honor in the class of 1825. Studied theology at Andover and was a Congregationalist pastor at Middletown and then Colebrook, Connecticut. He was the editor of the Congregational Observer for a few years and then editor and owner of the New Englander magazine.
