Jennie (Tuttle) Hobart is Notable.

Daughter of prominent attorney Socrates Tuttle and his wife Jane (Winters) Tuttle

Married to Garret Hobart, who later became Vice President of the United States in 1897.

Mother of:, Fannie Beckwith (born 1871 - 6 July 1895), Elizabeth Tuttle (born 1875 - died 6 Aug 1876), Garret Augustus Jr (born 31 August 1884 - died 29 September 1940), and Katherine Gray (born 1886 - died 18 Nov 1886),

Held the title of "Second Lady of the United States" as the wife of a Vice President.

Was a noted philanthropist and community activist. While her husband was in the White House, she often served as the official White House Hostess due to President McKinley's wife (Ida Saxton McKinley) having epilepsy. She remained a close friend of First Lady McKinley even after Jennie's husband died in office and she left the White House in 1899.

She remained in her son's household for the remainder of her life until his passing on 29 September 1940. She died of pneumonia a few months later on January 8, 1941.

  • This record is included as an interesting note - she did not die in 1869, but there is this obvious record of her death. Not sure where to go with this, but unusual for her to show this type of record when she lived to 1941. Best guess - it's meant to be a "New Jersey Marriage" record and someone miscategorized it.
