JAMES TURNER DEAD; CAME HERE IN 1856
PIONEER RESIDENT OF CITY SUCCUMBS--FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY.
James Turner, for the last sixty-four years a resident of Rockford and vicinity, died at the home of his daughter yesterday afternoon at 3:10 o'clock after a short illness incident to his advanced age of eighty-six year.s
Mr. Turner was born April 26, 1833, at Campbeltown, Argyleshire, Scotland, coming to the United States twenty-three years later. and settling near Argyle, Ill. his marriage to Miss Ann Greenlee, who predeceased him two years ago, took place on April 25, 1861.
Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Turner resided on a farm near Argyle for over fifty years. Mr. Turner retired from active farm life in 1901 and thereafter made his home in this city. Since the death of Mrs. Turner, he resided with his daughter, Mr.s Warren Gilmore.
Was Staunch Presbyterian.
Mr. Turner was a member of the First Presbyterian church and during his active years took a prominent part in the church activities. He possessed the happy faculty of making and maintain friends, who will feel his passing with a great sense of personal loss. He was an ideal father, husband, and citizen, and his characteristic integrity of thought and action make him a valuable resident here.
Mr. Turner is survived by nine children, John G. Turner, Red Oak, IA; Mrs. C.P Ferguson, Lake City, IA, James Turner, Belvidere; Mrs. G.H. Warren, Lyndon, Kansas; Hector D. Turner, Griswold, IA; Nora N. Turner, Red Oak, IA, ad Mrs. Warren GIlmore, Mrs. E.H. Ralstona nd G.A Turner of this city.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. W.H. Fulton officiating . Interment will be in the West Side Cemetery. [6]
