Ian Graham Turbott, the son of Thomas Turbott, country headmaster, and a farmer's daughter, Eva (nee Graham), was born in Whangarei, north of Auckland, in 1922.
His mother passed away two years later, and his Aunt Essie would take over the role of surrogate mother.
Ian studied at Auckland University College and Jesus College, Cambridge.
On 27 November 1941 Ian Turbott was a 2nd Lieutenant #436370 with the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Scottish Regiment, stationed at Wellington, New Zealand. [1][2]
He served six years in the New Zealand Army as part of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War II, including service in Italy, the South Pacific and the Middle East. He left the army with the rank of captain.
Ian Turbott married Nancy Hall Lantz 24 August 1952 in Sacramento, California, United States. [3] and they had three daughters, Elizabeth, Katharine and Jennifer.
After leaving uniformed service, Turbott joined the British Colonial Service with an appointment to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony. After a secondment to the British Colonial Office, he served as Administrator of Antigua between 1958 and 1964. In 1964 he was appointed Administrator of Grenada, continuing in the role after it became a governorship in 1967.
Ian Turbott was made a knight bachelor in the 1968 British New Year's Honours List.
The Turbott family immigrated to Australia in 1970 where he entered business.
Ian was a New Zealand-Australian former diplomat, university administrator and was actively involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award as Chair of the NSW Advisory Committee from 1982 to 1995 and concurrently in that time serving as a Director of the National Board.
Between 1989 and 2000 Turbott served as Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney
In 1985 he was named Australian Father of the Year.
He passed away in 2016.

What I have a question about is the migration. The man was a military officer, so he didn't really "migrate" did he? And, if you believe he did migrate, it was not from New Zealand to Australia. He migrated to other places and it is not clear if the final move was from Grenada to Australia. What do you think? Thanks, Natalie
