Roger Yonchien Tsien was born in New York City on February 1, 1952. He was the son of Hsue-Chu Tsien and Li Yi Ying. His family ancestry can be traced to Hangzhou, China. He grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, won a National Merit Scholarship, and attended Harvard College. He then studied at the University of Cambridge through a Marshall Scholarship.
Roger was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Osamu Shimomura and Martin Chalfie, in 2008.
Roger died in Eugene, Oregon on August 24, 2016.
