Biography

John Tryon is the son of Stephen and Effy Tryon and lived in Broome Co., NY. He married Mary Warner. (His wife's name is confirmed as Mary Warner Tryon: the John Tryon household had strong links with a Warner family in the immediate vicinity, she is named as Mary Warner on daughter Ella Tryon Meacham's death certificate[1], she is named in the obituary of daughter Eva Tryon Johnson (Mrs. Irvin Johnson)[2] and she is buried in Middleburgh Cemetery, noted as having died 30 Dec 1877.) Research Notes

John Tryon had been two people earlier on WikiTree based on the 1860 census when John was counted twice, once at his home with Mary and first child and once a few miles away at Freeman Tryon's widow's home which was next door to Stephen Tryon. There is still some uncertainty about whether this is one or two John Tryons. If there are two, they are cousins, grandsons of David Tryon. The following establishes that Stephen Tryon had a son John, Freeman Tryon did not have a son John, and John married Mary Warner. David's other two sons who could be a father of a John Tryon are David Tryon and Enoch Tryon. There is some evidence that each of them had a child about the right time.

In the 1850 census of Broome, John, age 20, and his father Stephen live next door to Phebe, Freeman's widow, and her children. In 1855 it is much the same except John is not living with Stephen. In 1855, John Tryon, age 23, lives in Middleburgh with 18 year old Harriet Warner and newborn son Nelson Warner-Tryon. In 1860 Stephen and Phebe are still in Broome, brother David lives with Stephen and John Tryon, age 29, lives with Phebe. In this same 1860 census, but in Middleburgh, 13 days later, John Tryon, age 30, wife Mary, and first child are found.

John Tryon married to Mary Warner, died in 1908, and is buried in Middleburgh Cemetery, where Mary is also buried.

Stephen Tryon's probate record shows that his will was contested by his wife and two sons, one of whom was named John.

No son of the right age is in Freeman Tryon's entry in the 1840 census and that Freeman's probate record agrees with that census.

I can't come to a very satisfying conclusion from all of this but here is my best shot. John, son of Stephen, moved to Middleburgh before 1855 and lived with Harriet Warner and her child (probably not his). Shortly after this he married Harriet's sister Mary Warner, settled down in Middleburgh, and had eight children. Harriet likely died before 1860 since Nelson is then raised by Harriet's parents. John, son of David, also died or disappeared after 1860.

And on another note: According to his Find a Grave Memorial, he married a second time, to Margaret ____. Wife Mary is last seen in the 1875 census and died 30 Dec 1877. No wife is present in the 1880 census, and wife Maggie appears in the 1892 census.

Happy with merging.

I'm changing my position on the merging of Tryon-3068 and Tryon-2973. There is a probate record here [(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9C3-F93C-R?cc=1920234&wc=Q7Y3-4WL%3A213303801%2C217832501] that states that John, Stephen, and Effie, the sons and wife of Stephen, all live in Middleburgh in 1880. That John is married to Mary Warner. It appears that he was counted twice in the 1860 census as suggested by Michael last year. If you agree we can proceed with the merge that we rejected last Fall.

I've been in contact with this profile manager and she is looking into her sources and will get back to me in the next few days. She says we can edit as needed. I'll wait and see what she finds and then we can proceed with the merge and recreate the John who is not married to Mary Warner.

The 1843 John is likely this one: "United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC4G-333 : 4 October 2017), John Tryon in entry for Sanford Tryon, 1860. I have created profiles for Sanford and family.

The other John Tryon profile is the one linked to Mary (Warner) Tryon. Without merging, she will end up with two husbands. I did not check every one of the open sources in the other profile, but some sources do appear in both profiles, and certainly the two Johns' dates are close (birth) or a match (death). The one other difference between the two Johns is in their parentage: this John was disconnected from Freeman Tryon and Phebe Tallman due to the weight of evidence, and the other John is linked to Stephen Tryon and Effa Hilts. I have sent a private message to Living LaFever about this. He has the "backwards" chain and we have the "forwards" chain which can then be checked for accuracy. Once merged, we can sort out any references to sources for the John Tryon who didn't live in Middleburgh.

Unless we hear otherwise soon from the manager of the other profile we should just change them, not merge them. There are two different Johns. One lives in Broome and is the son of Stephen. He's the profile posted by LaFever. The one on this page lives in Middleburgh all his life, married to Mary Warner, with children Pedro, etc. Don't know who his father is. The 1908 death date comes from a memorial in Middleburgh Cemetery (where Mary is also buried) and so likely is for the John on this page, not the other one. Both the John profiles are open so I can just go in and fix them if that's ok. I have all the refs, etc. at hand since I've been working on this branch of the family for a couple weeks.

I've been comparing the unmerged match that's been suggested. Even many of the references are the same. Is it possible to proceed with the match?

I don't think this this is Freeman's son. In the 1840 census there is no son in the correct age range. This John is consistently associated with Phebe (Tryon) Sanford and consistently lives in Middleburgh, not where Freeman lives. The other John I only find in the 1850 and 1860 Broome census; with Stephen (Tryon-2223) in 1850 (with Phebe (Tallman) Tryon next door) and with Phebe in 1860 with Stephen next door. John (Tryon-3068) is most likely Stephen's son. In the 1840 census Stephen has a son in the correct age range. The John on this page (Tryon-2973) is a different person. Possibly Amos and Phebe (Tryon) Sanford's son but he doesn't fit the 1840 census for them. I would reject the proposed merge and move wife Mary to this one and delete death date on other one.

1860 has two possible records, either a double count or two separate men:

"United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC4V-7QK : 30 December 2015), John Tryon in entry for Phebe Tryon, 1860.

"United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC4V-CCM : 30 December 2015), John Tryon, 1860.

One is in Broome, Scoharie County, the other Middleburgh, Scoharie County. (Both NYS, about 8 miles apart.)

The first links to Phebe Tryon, the second connects to Warner's.

1892 and 1905 records have him with second wife Maggie.
