Robert Tryon was the fourth son of Thomas Tryon Esq. and Harriet Brereton. He entered the Navy 6 July 1824, passed his examination in 1830, obtained his first commission 28 Aug 1834 and was appointed on the 3rd of September as Additional Lieutenant to the Thalia 46, bearing the flag of Rear-Admiral Aptrick Campbell at the Cape of Good Hope. On 19 Jan 1835 he was assigned to the Trinculo, on 11 Feb 1836 again back to the Thalia as Flag-Lieutenant to Rear-Admiral Campbell, with whom he returned to England in 1838. On 23 Feb 1839 he was assigned to the Royal George yacht under Capt. Lord Adolphus FitzClarence. He attained the rank of Commander 23 Nov 1841 and served in that capacity aboard the Mutine in the Mediterranean from 29 Sep 1846 until he achieved the rank of Captain on 27 Oct 1847, after which he was on half pay.[1]
His marriage on December 9, 1840 to Henrietta Prevost, daughter of Admiral James Prevost, was registered in the 4th Quarter (Oct-Nov-Dec) of 1840 in Alverstoke, Hampshire.[2]
In 1841 he was living in the Marina, Hastings and is noted as LRN (Lieutenant, Royal Navy) with his young wife Harriet [Henrietta].
In the 1851 census he was living in Warwickshire, was listed as a post-Captain in the Royal Navy, with a wife Caroline (maiden name unknown) who had been born in the Cape of Good Hope (British protectorate) in about 1814. This marriage is not otherwise documented and as he had travelled on many occasions out to the Cape, the marriage may have been contracted there. Caroline died before the 12th of December 1853 and was buried on that date in Monks Kirby, Warwickshire.[3]
Robert married a third time, to Lelia Sophia Skipworth, daughter of Sir Grey Skipwith, 8th Baronet and Harriet Townsend, on January 3, 1855 in Alveston, Warwickshire.[4]
A son, William Henry Tryon b 1855, is purported to be the son of Henrietta, but the child's baptism record clearly shows that he was the son of Robert and his third wife, Lelia.
Robert and Lelia had a son: Charles Robert Tryon, b 1857.
His death was registered in the 4th Quarter (Oct-Nov-Dec) of 1890 in Fareham, Hampshire.[5]
His estate was probated in London 17 May 1891, with proceeds to Edith Augusta Muriel Charters, single woman. Effects were £688 6s. 3d. Note says Former Grant P.R. 9 January 1891.[6]
He is buried in St. Peter's, Titchfield, Hampshire, as is his father.[7]
