Biography

Notables Project
Liz Truss MP is Notable.

In 2022 Liz Truss became the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party. She resigned after only 45 days - the shortest term of any UK Prime Minister.

Early years

Flag of Oxfordshire (adopted 2017)
Liz Truss MP was born in Oxfordshire, England.
Mary Elizabeth Truss, known as Liz Truss, was born in 1975[1] at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. She has three younger brothers;[2][3] her parents' first child, Matthew, died in infancy in 1974.[4]

The Truss family moved to Paisley, Renfrewshire, when Liz was four years old. In 1987 they spent 12 months in British Columbia, Canada, while Liz's father was a visiting professor at Simon Fraser University.[3] Liz attended Parkcrest Elementary School in Burnaby. She later stated that the experience "changed [her] outlook on life."[5]

On returning from Canada the family relocated to the Roundhay district of Leeds, West Yorkshire,[3] where her father became a professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds. Truss has described her parents as "left-wing" and said that her mother, a nurse, took her on Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament marches. After attending Roundhay School in Leeds, Truss read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Merton College, Oxford.[2]

Professional life

After graduating in 1996, Truss joined the oil and gas company, Shell. She joined Cable & Wireless in 2000 and became its economic director before leaving in 2005. In 2008 she was appointed the deputy director of Reform, a think-tank.[6]

Political career

While at university, Truss was a Liberal Democrat and spoke at the party conference in 1994 in favour of abolishing the monarchy.[7] In 1996 she joined the Conservative party and met her husband at the party conference the following year.[2]

Between 1998-2000, Truss was chair of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association. She was unsuccessful in two attempts to stand for Greenwich London Borough Council in 1998 and 2002, before being elected as a councillor in 2006. In 2001 Truss was the Conservative candidate for the parliamentary seat of Hemsworth, West Yorkshire. She lost, but increased the Tory share of the vote by 3.2%. Truss was elected to Parliament in 2010, representing the constituency of South West Norfolk.[6] She served as environment secretary under Prime Minister David Cameron. Theresa May appointed Truss as justice secretary and Boris Johnson made her foreign secretary.[7]

After winning a leadership contest voted on by members of the Conservative party, she succeeded Boris Johnson as Leader of the Conservative Party - and therefore Prime Minister of the United Kingdom - on 6 September 2022.[8] Liz Truss became the third woman to serve as UK Prime Minister. After the results of the leadership content were announced, Truss went to Balmoral, the residence of Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland, and she was asked to form a government.[9] Truss was the final Prime Minister to meet the Queen; Elizabeth II died two days later.[10]

Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister after 45 days in office.[11] She was succeeded as leader of the Tory party (and thus Prime Minister) by Rishi Sunak, who was the first Prime Minister to be appointed by King Charles III.

Personal life

In 2000 Truss married her husband, an accountant.[12] The couple have two daughters.[7]
