Biography

Children

Augustus and Sarah were the parents of at least 12 children (see census records in the Sources section, below).

Second Marriage

Sarah Ann (Decker) Trumbull died in June of 1870. I have seen a tree showing he was remarried to an Emily Hadley in 1872. The 1870 U.S. census (enumerated July 1870) shows him widowed, living with nine children. The 1875 NY state census, 1880 U.S. census and the 1892 NY state census shows him with a wife Emma (1875), Emily (1880), or Emilie (1892). I have sent email to the person with the name Emily Hadley and marriage date, asking for sources. It seems likely, though not certain, that the Emma or Emily on the census records census is Emily Hadley, referred to in that tree.

Birth

Date: 31 Dec 1820
Place: New York.
Source: Todd Springberg
Date: 31 Dec 1820
Place: Orange, New York, USA.
Sources: Sherry Marshall, Kathy Schimp
Note: NY state census, 1865 also gives Orange county as his birthplace, but not the exact birth date.
Date: abt. 1821
Place: New York (state), USA.

Residence in 1831

Clayton shows him residing in Sonora (Town of Bath, Steuben County, NY) sometime prior to the book's publication in 1879. The brief reference (p. 453, section "Statistical Directory," under heading Bradford) reads:
"Trumbull, Augustus A., Farmer, b. New York, s. 1831, p. o. add. Sonora."
I did not find an abbreviations key in this book. Guesswork: "s. 1831" = settled 1831 (w. parents, presumably. Would be age 10-11), "p. o. add. Sonora" = post office address Sonora. Numerous NY state census records show him born Orange County (see Sources, below).

Parents' Marriage

Husband: James B Trumbull
Wife: Esther Pullen
Child: Augustus A Trumbull
Marriage Date: 1820
Place: Orange county, New York.

Death

Date: 14 Jan 1895
Place: Sonora, New York, United States.

Sources

  • Source: S1 United States Census, 1850. Shows Augustus and wife Sarah, both age 29 (est. birth 1821) with 5 children, ranging in age from 2 months (Image. Transcription says age 0) to 6 years, and Sarah's brother Jeremiah Decker, age 22, in the household. Family living in Town of Campbell, Steuben county, New York. His occupation is given as farmer (image).
  • Source: S2 New York, State Census, 1855. Shows Augustus and wife Sarah, both age 34 (est. birth 1821) with 8 children, ranging in age from 3 months (Image. Transcription says age 0) to 12. All children born Steuben County (image). This shows them living in Town of Bath, Steuben county. The image also says they have been living in this Town (called Township in many other states) for 7 years, suggesting the Town was renamed, or borders redrawn since the 1850 US census, above. Occupation, farmer (image).
  • Source: S3 United States Census, 1860. His name given as Augustine (poss. handwriting/transcription problem), and misspells the family name "Trumbul" (one L). Shows Augustus and wife Sarah, him, age 39 (est. birth 1821), her, age 37 (About two years younger than shown on earlier censuses, above.) with 10 children, ranging in age from 1 to 17 years, in the household. Family living in Hamlet of Sonora, Steuben county, New York. Sonora is a tiny hamlet on New York route 226, about halfway between the slightly larger Savona and Bradford, NY. Occupation, farmer (image - Fold3.com, pay site).
  • Source: S4 New York, State Census, 1865. Misspells his name "Augustin Trumble." Shows Augustus and wife Sarah, both age 46 (est. birth 1819) with 11 children, ranging in age from 9 months (Image. Transcription says age 0) to 20 years. Oldest daughter, Esther, no longer in household. Gives his birth as Orange County, NY, Sarah & all children born Steuben County (image). Still living in Town (aka, township) of Bath, Steuben county. Occupation for him and two oldest sons, farmer (image).
  • Source: S5 United States Census, 1870. Enumerated 26 Jul 1870, this shows him with nine children, ages 5 to 24. Wife Sarah is believed to have died the previous month. Also in the household, 3-year-old Louise Nash; I have not identified her, or her connection to the family.
  • Source: S6 New York, State Census, 1875. This is the census showing him with second wife, Emma. She may be the Emily Hadley named in a personal tree I have seen on the web (see Second Marriage, above). Three children, ages 10-16, in household. Surname misspelled "Trumball."
  • Source: S7 U.S. Census, 1880. Enumerated 5 & 7 June, 1880. Surname misspelled "Turnbull." Shows Augustus, age 60, with 2nd wife Emily, age 46, son Daniel H., age 21, and widowed mother, age 89. Augustus and son Daniel still farming. This shows them living in the village of Bradford, but it seems likely this is still the same farm as earlier censuses, located near the unincorporated hamlet of Sonora, about 4 miles (7 km) southwest of Bradford. Some information from image of enumeration sheet (Ancestry.com - pay site).
  • Source: S8 New York, State Census, 1892. Shows Augustus, age 71 (est. birth 1821), presumably widowed, since wife Sarah is shown d. 1870 elsewhere. This shows him still living in Town (aka township) of Bath, Steuben county. The image shows an Emilie Trumbull, age 60, immediately below his entry. This woman is obviously too old to be his daughter Emily (b. ca. 1851) - poss. 2nd wife? This census enumeration sheet has very minimal information about the people listed. LATER: See the section Second Marriage and the 1870, 1875 and 1880 census entries, above, for more information. It now seems that Emily (or Emma) was indeed his second wife.

  • Source: S24 Pedigree Resource File. User submitted. Shows 10 children, his parents. Multiple records suggest this is my Catherine Trumbull's father. Catherine is shown here as a child born 1847. That is her birth date on her marriage and other documents. A census record after her marriage to Hamilton Shores shows New York as place of birth.
