Jakob Trott was born in 1902, presumably in Grimm, Russia, where his family lived at the time of the 1897 Grimm census. His parents, Christian Jakob Trott and Elisabeth (Fritzler) Trott, decided to immigrate with their family to the United States in 1911.

They boarded the S.S. Willehad in Bremen, Germany, on 23 November 1911 and arrived in Baltimore on 09 December 1911. After staying briefly with relative Christian Trott (not his father) in Cincinnati, Ohio, the family settled in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where other neighbors from Grimm were living, including his uncle Carl Fritzler and his family. Note that on the passenger manifest list, his surname was misspelled as Drott.
