Biography

A native Mobilian, as well as the first of his clan to be born there, David has had intermittent forays into photography since his childhood. This time, it appears to have blossomed. He has accumulated numerous local and regional art awards and, briefly, in editorial photography as well (although he decidedly disavows the label “photojournalist”). He was chief photographer for LAGNIAPPE during its first six years of operation. He has served as a jurist for several photographic competitions and mentor for several gifted students of photography. His thematic exhibition “Apparitions” has being presented to larger venues through the South.

Until December 2018, his days were most frequently spent as a supervisor at the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital Cardiopulmonary Department, at which point, he retired. Other avocations include the study of history (currently, post-Roman/pre-conquest, in addition to medieval, England, Scotland & Wales), genealogy, karst hydrogeology, underwater cave exploration/mapping and various musical endeavors. He continues to print in his “wet” darkroom and explores archaic printing techniques, which are in danger of becoming lost owing to the proliferation of ink-jet printers.

He was awarded an "Excellence in Human Interest Photography in a Non-Daily Newspaper" by the Press Club of Mobile in August 2006, as well as several citations in WireImage's "Images of the Year 2005" for his Hurricane Katrina documentary images. At LaGrange National Biennial XXIII, he was honored by a purchase award from the Lamar Dodd Art Center in March 2004. Mobile Bay Monthly’s annual reader poll, “The Best of the Bay” named him as “The Arts - Best Photographer” in 2004 and 2005 (the category was discontinued thereafter). The annual juried competition CAMERA SOUTH 2004 honored him with the Board of Governors Award, in addition to several others (since then, he was a jurist for CAMERA SOUTH 2005 & 2006).

Locally, his work can be seen at Innova Arts in Mobile, AL, Lyons Share Gallery in Fairhope, AL, the University of South Alabama Main Library, as well as at USA-Childrens & Women's Hospital.

David Trimmier (a.k.a. Mr. Bad Example) was the first person bearing his surname to be born in Mobile, Alabama. His colonial ancestors hail from South Carolina, Virginia, and, previously, Cornwall & Devon. You shouldn’t EVER suggest to him that his name is French,:trust us on this.

As a young fellow, he studied at the knee of the late Ray Breneman, a commercial photographer and Brooks Institute alumnus. Later, he studied at the Achilles tendon of the late Roy Thigpen. Beyond that, he was largely self-taught, self-acknowledged, and self-abusive. In his twentieth year, a household intruder relieved him of his equipment.

Consequently, David put thoughts of his photographic efforts behind him in favor of concentrating on his obligations with the U.S. Naval Service and his 2 years old son.

Subsequently, David established himself as respiratory therapist with diverse interests including pediatric critical care and diving medicine. He is a well-known educator regarding sport and commercial diving safety issues, as well as pediatric advanced life support. His interest in the exploration and geology of the underwater caves of the Dougherty Karst District, combined with his mysterious mind-control powers, led to his election to the Alabama Academy of Science. His bibliography includes Underwater Speleology, Journal of the National Association for Cave Diving, aquaCorps Journal, Deep Tech Journal, Journal of the Alabama Academy of Science and the Mobile Press Register.

After a 25-year hiatus, David’s deep and abiding love for the photographic process was rekindled. Whether his criminal record follows suit is yet to be seen. In the summer of 2002, he was appointed chief photographer for Lagniappe, Mobile’s fortnightly alternative newspaper.

Allegedly, he made the acquaintance of his erstwhile editors whilst holding a hand-made sign "Will shoot people for money" on St. Michael Street once upon a hot summer day. Fortunately, they quickly realized that he was a photographer and not an incarnation of Roland the Thompson Gunner.

David also has musical tendencies, playing more than a few instruments, and performing publicly, usually in the most unusual of circumstances and venues. His efforts to found a church based on the lyrics of Tom Waits have lost some of their steam after the federal grand jury proceedings, but David maintains the project is merely resting.

Seriously though, David is establishing himself as a dynamic force in the world of fine art photography.

Hi David --

You’ve been here about a week, so I’m just checking in. How is it going so far? Were the How-Tos helpful or did they leave you with questions?

We want to help! Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

See you in the branches, Cindy ~ WikiTree Greeter

PS Enjoy the ride! Expect to hear back regarding your GEDCOM within 24-48 hours. Have fun working on your family tree.

I uploaded a GEDCOM earlier today. I changed my birth name, as well as a few other things.

Yes, I've decided to join! What next?

David, it's great to here you're working on your GEDCOM. See "Before importing a GEDCOM" for some tips. They're all reviewed manually by an elite team (i.e., a very small team), so you'll want to watch for pitfalls like large numbers of unsourced individuals.

Also, were you always named Trimmier-Tremere or did you start with one variant and change to the other? If so, try to set your Last Name at Birth to, well, your last name at birth, and your Current Last Name or Other Last Names to the variants. Right now you won't appear in the lists of 30 members and ancestors named Trimmier, or in the list of two very ancient Tremere ancestors.

I hope you'll add a research tag or two - how about Trimmier and Tremere? - and decide to join.
