Ernst was born in 1921. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Carl and Clara Triemer.
Ernst August Triemer immigrated from Germany and arrived in the US at Ellis Island with his mother Clara Triemer (nee Schreivogel) in June 1923, and grew up in Passaic, New Jersey. [1]
Ernst enlisted in the navy on 23 Aug 1939.
13 May 1940 Transferred to FFT Combatwing 4, Bremerton, Wash. for duty[2]
18 Feb 1941 Arrived on the USS Rigel as Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class [3]
27 Dec 1941 Transferred to the Albermarie (AV-5) from the 82nd Patrol Squadron [4]
By 1 Jul 1945 he was stationed on the USS Indianapolis as Ensign.
Ernst married Virginia Marie Simone Triemer in New Jersey on 5 May 1945, later moving to Berkeley, Calif. [5]
In July 1945 the USS Indianapolis was sent on a secret mission to deliver the components of the Little Boy atomic bomb to Tinian Island without an escort, on the return trip, still without escort, it was attacked by a Japanese submarine. The USS Indianapolis sank in 12 minutes on 30 Jul 1945 with some 300 of the 1,195 crewmen aboard going down with the ship. With few lifeboats and many without life jackets, only 316 of the nearly 900 men set adrift survived the 4 days in shark infested water before rescue. Ernst was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. The crew of the USS Indianapolis was later awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.[6][7]
Ernst is honored at two memorials: USS Indianapolis National Memorial, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana and Fort William Mckinley, Manila, Philippines.[8][9]
